For a brief glimpse into the unique life of a player of Wolf, Undyinglegends.com presents an interview with one of RtCW 1.0's most eloquent people, UL's own BBQ Sandwich aka Ich. Look for interviews of more Undying Legends in the near future.
Q: How long have you been involved with the Return to Castle Wolfenstein 1.0 multiplayer community?
A: I've been playing RtCW 1.0 online since August 2004.
Q: What was the first nickname you used on multiplayer, and why did you choose that alias?
A: My original nicknames on 1.0 were "CAPT Flamodo" and "Ichbrechedich." I was first introduced to RtCW by my older sibling, and those were the aliases on his .cfg. The former name was dropped and the latter name quickly shortened to "Ich," which is "ego" (and the first person pronoun) in the German language, as well as a tropical fish disease. Conveniently enough, it also fits in at the end of "BBQ Sandwich."
Q: You've been playing the game for a few years now; have you ever thought about quitting? If so, what was the reason that you decided to stay?
A:
I have often considered quitting the game, since RtCW has been the single most significant contributing factor in ruining my academic and professional pursuits during the past four and a half years. The reason I don't ever actually quit Wolf for more than a month is that I can't. On the rare occasions that I've been away from Wolf for any length of time (such as when I was banned from S4ndmod for over a month in two separate instances), I've experienced a variety of unpleasant symptoms of Wolfenstein Withdrawal Syndrome (WWS) that range from prolonged arm and finger spasms to headaches reminiscent of those caused by FPS lag to the irrational desire to trickjump down staircases and through windows.
Q: What is your favorite player class and weapon in RtCW?
A: Currently I play as Medic; my specialty is bullet-sponge and suicide-revive. Violence doesn't solve anything, so I also enjoy using medpacks. I sincerely miss the good old days of objective map gameplay, when I preferred to play as Engineer.
Q: You've been in UL for a few years and you're also one of the captains; what is it that's made you stay in UL for such a long time?
A: When I first applied for membership in UL, I wasn't sure I'd get in. In an ironic twist of fate, I'm now stuck here because no other clan wants me.
Also, my initial reasons for joining UL involved an elaborate scheme to catch Ron Mexico and Blackfire on hidden camera exchanging trade secrets. I'm still working on that.
In seriousness, the atmosphere within the UL family is an amazing mix of professional competence and laid-back friendliness that really appeals to me; I consider it a privilege to game with everyone of the Undying Legends.
I also enjoy the fringe benefits of being part of a group with such an awesome reputation, including free e-dating advice from Gsicht, haircare tips from Blackfire, and political analysis from Exodus.
Q: What have been the most embarrassing and the most awesome moments in your RtCW career?
A: That's a tricky question...I've done a lot of embarssing and stupid things in RtCW, most of which I have since conveniently forgotten. Probably the most embarassing event of my recent RtCW career would be either when I briefly won ownership of the Matrix clan in a bet, or else my role in the Porkchops Sandwiches saga.
The single most awesome thing for me in RtCW so far is definitely having gotten into UL, but any time I run into a Wolf gamer who is also a fellow SBR enthusiast, that just makes my day.
Q: We all know the main problem in 1.0 aka cheaters; you've got a reputation for catching such people. What's the impulse that causes you to confront that problem like no other?
A: Before I joined UL, I was co-leader of an amazing bunch of Wolf gamers known as M!A (Missing in Action). Being something of a noob in the world of online multiplayer gaming, I didn't really understand the concept of "wallhack" or "aimbot," and I never really took seriously the possibility that some of my associates might be utilizing cheats. Somewhere along the road, M!A leadership caught a few players in the act of aimbotting and wallhacking within the ranks of M!A. Being relatively new to the 1.0 scene, we were concerned about the reputation of our group if we had members lame enough to download artificial skill. Not quite pr0 enough to know the difference between an IP and a private eye, we simply confronted the individuals in question and kicked them from M!A, often without recording any identifying information or evidence on the players caught cheating.
Our relaxed attitude and general cluelessness led to some cheaters being given second and even third chances; we heard every excuse from "my father who is dying of liver cancer beats me and so I had to download an aimbot" to "my mother went on my computer, downloaded a wallhack, upgraded to version 1.4, and got me punkbusted."
It quickly became apparent that the more closely we examined the playing style and mannerisms of our newer members, the more of them we recognized as players who had recently been caught cheating. Some of us at M!A became paranoid, and started cross-checking IP addresses of all members on the roster. It turns out that many of our players were simply using new aliases to rejoin each time they were kicked for cheating; beyond that, a few prominent cheaters from other clans had made it into M!A due to our obliviousness.
We didn't want lamesauce cheaters on our team, but realizing that we'd been playing "gotcha" with the same people over and over again was rather frustrating given that we were just a bunch of casual gamer friends looking for an outlet. So M!A leadership retired the clan, and each of the legitimate players remaining wandered to various other clans or else left RtCW entirely. To this day, I blame the prevalence of cheating on 1.0 for the demise of M!A.
On a related note, range bans neccessitated by repeat offenders cause unbelievable stress for those players accidentally caught in the cross-fire. Having been collateral damage myself on two occasions, and having heard every possible excuse from cheaters, I have no sympathy whatsoever for those who are caught in the act of intentionally utilizing unethical gaming practices, even just to "try it out."
Q: If you could change something, what would you change on RTCW 1.0?
A: I would like to see more clan-operated objective servers, with both the traditional map rotations and also the less conventional maps, such as Kung Fu Grip and Toxic Speedball. The currently extant objective gameplay servers are not particularly friendly for teamwork-oriented gameplay, and beach map over and over again just isn't cutting it after so many years.
Q: Do you ever find RtCW to be isolating you from the outside world, and do you ever take the game too personally?
A: Yes.
Q: Have you ever met a friend from wolf IRL?
A: I've met two wolf gamers in person. When I first got in to UL, I found out that Matt (MasterC) was a fellow student at the University of Florida. I got bored of studying for an exam at 2AM, so I jogged over to campus to harass Matt while he was at work. If you're wondering why Matt was *working* at 2AM, well, don't ask. We had a brief conversation about a particular cereal variety, and I discovered that MasterC was pretty much the stereotypical gamer dork...all he could talk about was his config and Wolf politics. It was pretty awkward...the moral of the story is "don't visit strangers that you meet online."
About two and a half years ago, I bumped into Andrew (Bloodorgy) at Universal Citywalk. Since we go way back (I was one of Andrew's first recruits when he started MJA, which quickly evolved into M!A) we had plenty to discuss other than Wolf. At some point we visited the Citywalk cigar shop, and Andrew bought the largest cigar in the store to bring back home to John (YourFace) as a gag gift.
I've also attempted to introduce several of my friends and family members to the wonderful world of Wolfenstein, but most of them seem to prefer the single player mode due to the dearth of reasonably playable objective servers and the highly cliquish and competitive nature of the RtCW 1.0 online deathmatch community.
Q: Word on the street is that your weewee is not so impressive aka it's *pinky* size; did that ever bother you till now and is it really that tiny?
A: That's a common misconception; I'm actually a eunuch. At any rate, I defer to the learned philosopher who once said "size matters not."

For a brief glimpse into the unique life of a player of Wolf, Undyinglegends.com presents an interview with one of RtCW 1.0's friendliest faces, UL's own Gsicht Vienna. Look for interviews of more Undying Legends in the near future.
Q: How long have you been involved with the Return to Castle Wolfenstein 1.0 multiplayer community?
A: To tell the truth I have no clue, but I guess around 5 years.
Q: What was the first nickname you used on multiplayer, and why did you choose that alias?
A: I was always Gsicht Vienna aka since day 1...I choose that name mainly because I wanted a typical Viennese word and Gsicht ('face' in english) is a insider joke over here. It's for -- erm, not so pretty persons (mostly girls): when we can't remember the name of the person, we call 'em Gsicht.
I know that's mean but it's the truth.
And Vienna since it's my hometown and the City I Luv.
Q: Do you play RtCW frequently, and do you spend too much time on Wolfenstein-related activities?
A: Nope, I got a job with a lot responsibility, a GF I have to take care of, IRL friends, and RtCW. That means I don’t have time for any other online activities or games. I do [play RtCW frequently], but that doesn't mean that I play ALL the time, sometimes I am just ON and talk with people on the Server.
Q: What is your favorite player class and weapon in RtCW?
A: Medic-Mp40.
Q: Is there anything about Wolfenstein that helps you in your real life outside of Wolf?
A: Nothing I could think of, I'm IRL still the same person that I was before, maybe the difference is that I've got tons of new brothers and sisters aka a 2nd family called the UL Clan…that’s it…
Q: If you could change one aspect of your Wolfenstein gaming, what would it be?
A: I guess I would change the fact that I am sometimes wayyy too soft and I know that some people exploit that, but yeah that’s how I am, so I guess that won`t change.
Q: What is the most challenging aspect of running the most popular deathmatch server on 1.0?
A: I think to keep the Server *clean* as much as possible is definitely a challenge; also to keep a good vibe but at the same time not losing the respect on the Server isn't always that easy, but otherwise I've got to say that the whole UL Clan does a great job with all that Admin stuff.
I also wanna give a big thanks to Lily, because without her we wouldn’t have such an awesome Server.
Q: What has been your most memorable experience thus far in your career as a player of Wolfenstein?
A: Being a part of the UL Leadership.
Q: Have you ever met a friend from wolf IRL?
A: I'm happy that I'm able to answer this question with a big YESH…I met LOD Riddler, Jigsaw, Reebok, and a few others already, but I'm also happy to say that I have plans and *dates* already for 2009 aka I will hopefully meet tons of Wolfers next year…wooty wooot…

Q: How long have you been involved with the Return to Castle Wolfenstein 1.0 multiplayer community?
A: I have been playing RTCW 1.0 for five years on and off.
Q: Do you play frequently?
A: During the summer sometimes I can play all day and during school about 30 minutes to an hour everyday.
Q: What was the first nickname you used on multiplayer, and why did you choose that alias?
A: Haha my first alias was actually MAGNUM. I honestly don't have a clue why I chose that particular name, there actually is a brand of condom named that if I'm not mistaken. That was with my old clan TSA which I led back in the day.
Q: How did you select your current alias?
A: I picked Exodus after reading that book in the Bible. I'm a religious guy and enjoy expressing that in some of my names. I also use BBQ sauce which I use in honor of how AWESOME BBQ sauce is. Sweet baby ray's FTW!
Q: What is your favorite player class and weapon in RtCW?
A: My favorite class has got to be the medic and my favorite weapon...either the Panzerfaust or the needle.
Q: What has been your most memorable experience thus far in your career as a player of Wolfenstein?
A: Gotta be getting into UL. I've never had a better clan than this.
Q: What has been your most embarassing wolf moment?
A: Anytime I miss a vive I get pretty embarassed...also accidentally tossing a nade at my own team because I forgot which team I was on haha.
Q: Voicechat, catch phrases, quotes, and text binds are an integral part of Wolfenstein multiplayer gaming. What is your personal favorite phrase, quote, or bind?
A: "Disarm Ze Dynamite!" Or a recently added one.."Where's your shitter? I got a turtle head pokin out!" ~ from Fat bastard in Austin powers.
Q: About how long did it take you to beat the single player version of RtCW?
A: To be honest, I don't know if i've even beaten the thing yet. I just went straight to multiplayer and got better from there.
Q: Have you introduced any friends or family members to the wonderful world of Return to Castle Wolfenstein?
A: HA! No. My dad played the single player once.
Q: Other than Wolfenstein gaming, what do you do in your spare time?
A: I play tuba, play rugby, basketball, on a pro Call of duty team for PS3, and focus on getting good grades at school.
Q: How about work?
A: I actually get paid to play tuba in churches and play it for fun in youth symphonies. I'm also about to get a job at a local restaurant as a host. So hopefully that goes well.
Q: What kind of music do you listen to?
A: I will pretty much listen to anything...but my favorites have to be: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Primus, Ludo, Jethro Tull, Metallica, sublime...etc.
Q: What are your three favorite websites?
A: The UL forums and clan site, Facebook (www.facebook.com), and the Drudge Report (www.drudgereport.com).
Q: Rumors of a forthcoming sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein were recently confirmed. Do you intend to play RtCW 2?
A: Yes, if I ever get the money for a new computer (which isn't looking good for me)...otherwise I will play on PS3.
